“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Mahatma Gandhi Animals are one of God’s wonderful creations. A dog’s loyalty, a cat’s funny antics, a rabbit’s quiet demeanor, a hamster’s cuteness. They are very good listeners and comforters too. I can just sit and watch them, they never fail to amuse and put a smile on my face. I don’t know what i’ll do without animals in my life.Sadly, many people have a habit of buying pets on impulse, usually when they are still cute and young. After the novelties of owning a cute furry animal wear off, some people will abandon their pets on the streets while others gave them up to animal welfare organisations. Having a pet is a great responsibility. The Singapore Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) reported that it took in 3,002 dogs, 4,716 cats and 1,314 domestic small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, etc) in 2007, which add up to an alarming figure of 9,487 animals. Unfortunately, many animals that reach SPCA have to be put to sleep, as the shelter simply does not have the space to accommodate all the abandoned pets and only 2 in 10 animals get adopted. Remember, pets are family. You don’t abandon family.

“Where there is ruin, there is hope for a treasure.” RumiPulau Ubin is the second largest off shore island of Singapore (10.19 km²) situated in the north east of Singapore. The name Pulau Ubin literally means “Granite Island” in Malay, which explains the many abandoned granite quarries there. Pulau means “island”, and Ubin is said to be a Javanese term for “squared stone”. Exploration of the island is most often by transportation of a bicycle that can be rented on the island itself.Armed with a SLR for the first time, I embarked on a journey to a place ive been countless times; Pulau Ubin. The pictures captured on film added another layer to the sights of this old island, it’s beauty and age.In life, there will always be moments where we find new meaning or perspectives in things we’ve done or seen a million times. Never close your heart to the possibility, it might surprise you how much it can teach you still, after all this time.

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” ― F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great GatsbyIt was my first trip to South Korea. When i reached Seoul, it was summer. Despite the heat, and the rain, i loved it. Every single moment, every single experience. It was my first time away from home for a long period of time. Perhaps, that too contributed to the wide eyed wonder and excitement of endless possibilities. I felt all grown up and ready to conquer the world, one adventure at a time.

“My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it. ” Clarence Budington KellandFathers are the pillars of the family. They work hard, sweat and blood, to earn for the family, to put food on the table, to put their children through school. They too are our drivers, be it by car or bicycle. And on top of that, they are the jokers. I know my dad is one. The man, the strength, the powerful, stuck in time, not ageing. This is what i see my dad as. But once awhile, there are moments where Im reminded of how human he is and how God could take him back any moment. Then i start to see the white hairs and wrinkles, and it hit me how much time has passed. When i was a little girl, i used to get 5-10cents for every white hair I pluck, but now i can’t anymore cause he says if i do it now, he’ll be left with no hair. hahaha. Often we take them for granted, belittling or forgetting the hardships they go through for us, for the family. Take a moment out of your busy schedules to hug them or say thankyou. Remember to appreciate them. This photography project, i dedicate first and foremost to my own dad. Thankyou dad, for all those times you’ve drove me around, despite you being tired. Thankyou for working hard, sometimes with minimal rest or sleep so that we, your kids, have enough money for school, enough food on the table and enough of everything. Thankyou dad for trusting in me despite the countless times i’ve disappointed you. Thank you. I love you.

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Martin Luther King Jr.Firsts are usually nerve wrecking but at the same time exciting; this was my first autumn and my first hike up a mountain. And i would say, i would highly recommend hiking up a mountain in autumn. The temperature is just perfect.I started the hike up the mountain in the late afternoon. It didn’t cross my mind if i would have time to get back down while the sun was still up or if there would be any form of public transportation available when i do reach the bottom. and yet i just went on ahead. But looking back, i had no regrets because i caught the most amazing sunset, in autumn on a mountain. The sights, sounds and cool breeze, amazing. God is great. This is a reflection of most of our firsts. We go in not knowing what to expect, or often forgetting to plan. But after it all, looking back, it was always worth it, taking that first step. It all made us who we are today.Do you remember your first; kiss, love, book, adventure, pet, etc?

About:

A girl going through life with a camera in hand trying to make sense of the world around her.

“A photograph never grows old. You and I change, people change all through the months and years but a photograph always remains the same. How nice to look at a photograph of mother or father taken many years ago. You see them as you remember them. But as people live on, they change completely. That is why I think a photograph can be kind.”
